About me
Rebecca Klemm, PhD (Statistics), aka, The Numbers Lady is an educational maker located in Washington, DC. She has taught students from pre-K – PhD to help them understand where math came from and what it is about using cross-disciplinary stories and activities. In 1983 she received the Decision Sciences award for the teaching of quantitative subjects in business schools. After designing and producing a play, Cookin’ Up Numbers, for the 2010 Fringe Festival in Washington, DC, parents and teachers asked her to come up with ways to make math meaningful and alleviate math anxiety. She accepted the challenge and worked on aspects of what became NumbersAlive! in 2012. Since then she has penned four children’s books, one set of tandem STEAM books —one glossy physical and one linked digital for all ages—lyrics for songs, and storyline for animated and live-action short films, and has designed and made plush characters, puzzles and games (digital and physical). Her patented puzzle system to teach arithmetic, geometry and patterns, Number Linx, was named the best invention of North America at the 2017 invited international invention iCAN finals in Toronto. She teaches around the world at maker faires, as well as STEM/STEAM, math, and Science and Engineering Festivals. She teaches teachers, parents and students at public and professional development conferences.
